If you have bought a used vehicle imported from Japan, there is a good chance the dashboard display, the satellite navigation and half of the on-screen menus are still in Japanese. It is one of the first things owners notice — and one of the easiest to put right.
Why it happens
Vehicles built for the Japanese domestic market ship with their infotainment and instrument software set to Japanese. Unlike a phone, most of these systems have no simple language toggle buried in the settings — the region and language are baked into the firmware. So when the car lands in Barbados, the climate controls, the trip computer, the warning messages and the navigation all keep speaking the language they left the factory in.
